1909 New York to Seattle Race
The first Ocean to Ocean Automobile Race was held in June 1909. M. Robert Guggenheim, a 24 year-old
decendent of the wealthy mining family, sponsored a race from New York City to Seattle. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
Exposition was being held in Seattle. Guggenheim donated a $5,350 cash prize plus a 4 foot tall silver & gold
trophy to promote the Good Roads Movement that started in 1880.
The race was won by a stipped-down 1909 Model T Ford. We have an 18 minute video with many original
pictures from the race. The video and our actual replica of the winning Ford can be made available for
your organization at no cost to you.
The pictures you see here are of our recreation of that winning car. It is a licensed insurred driveable
car. The complete story of our recreation is available on the website -
